Let’s be honest; our society has developed an extreme obsession with perfection of the face and body. The numbers are in, and they’re not pretty.
A market research firm based in London called Mintel has found some interesting statistics showing that in 2018, 42-percent (more than four in ten) of women aged 16-24 have experienced stress related to how they look. Compare those numbers to 26-percent (a quarter) in 2016, and clearly, this is a growing problem for daughters today.
Social media sites like Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, in addition to reality television shows fuel the beauty obsession. Some celebrities now talk about their cosmetic enhancements and share their procedures with the public.
Young women are constantly bombarded with unrealistic beauty ideals, and this can lead to self-esteem issues, body dysmorphia, unhappiness and stress because they feel like they don’t measure up.
Courageous beauty brands like Dove are making a difference around the world by reaching out to young girls and providing self-esteem workshops at school. The “Dove Self-Esteem Project” continues to be an empowering program.
“5 Beauty Lessons To Teach You Daughter”:
1. Beware of Social Media
Social media is fun to look at and engage with, but it’s also often enhanced with all the tricks in the book.
Many of these sites take advantage of filters and fancy technology to cleverly alter the face and/or body.
Reality star Khloe Kardashian has admitted to People Magazine that she often enhances her photos with airbrush apps.
2. Find Your Uniqueness
Learning to appreciate one’s individual features and body is the first step. No one has perfection; every shape is different.
Your daughter is a special girl no matter how short or tall she is, etc. A mother can help her daughter build confidence by instilling in her that she is more than her body parts.
A mother should show her daughter that she, too, is accepting and appreciative of her own body.
3. Adopt Sensible Basics
It’s not easy preaching to young people, but the basics she learns at a young age will help your daughter lead a healthier life.
Emphasize that drinking lots of water is essential to keep the body running smoothly and maintain clear skin.
Smoking, using sunbeds and over-indulging in alcohol destroy youth and affect celebrities as well.
4. Avoid Makeup Overdose
Young girls are anxious to put on makeup to feel and look prettier. At her youthful age, she doesn’t need to plaster her delicate pores with heavy foundation.
Teach her that less is more. Makeup is fine but even lovelier with a lighter touch. A mother can show her daughter how to achieve an attractive appearance by applying makeup with her.
5. Smile! It Matters
Teaching your daughter to be positive and strong goes a long way.
Promoting a healthy body image will help your daughter feel beautiful all around as a whole person.
Smiling is one of the most attractive features people first look at. It’s genuine and lights up the face.
