Health Insurance Coverage

There are several ways to purchase health insurance coverage; through an insurance broker, an employer, or an online exchange (public and private). One of the most often used resources is the health insurance marketplace. The marketplace, otherwise known as an exchange offers ACA compliant and private non-ACA compliant insurance plans. Whether you are looking at ACA compliant or private ACA non-compliant coverage, an understanding of the differences between plans and available options is important before you make any decisions. One of the more perplexing obstacles when looking for coverage are the terms encountered when reviewing or talking to an agent about tentative coverage. Read on to discover some of the terms or phrases you will see when shopping for health coverage.

The Most Common And Important Terms To Know When Choosing A Health Care Plan

Although there are many plans to choose from with various types of coverage they do share in some of the following attributes:

1. Cost-sharing Plans – Costs are shared between the insured and the insurer;
typically the insured pays a deductible, copays, and a percentage of a medical
costs after the deductible is satisfied.
2. Coinsurance – Is when the insurer and insured each pay a percentage of a
medical cost. If your coinsurance is set at 80/20 then you pay 20% and your
insurance plan pays 80%. Sharing of costs stop for the insured when the out-of-
pocket reaches the maximum limit.
3. Essential Health Benefits – These are the 10 required healthcare benefits
required for all plans under the Affordable Healthcare Act. Although required,
short-term and association plans have been exempted from this ACA rule.
4. High Risk Pool– A group of people who are sicker, have pre-existing
conditions and multiple comorbidities.
5. Bronze, Silver, Gold Level Plans – Tiers of services provided by a health care plan. Tiers differ in percentage of health care costs covered by the insurer. Premiums, deductibles, and co-pays will also vary by tier.
6. Covered Service – A medical service paid for by the insurance plan which can include copays, coinsurance, deductible, and any other means which
is outlined by the insured.
7. Benefit Period – A benefit period varies by plan yet will cover a medical
condition over a specified period of time.
8. Deductible – The insured pays 100% of medical costs until the deductible is
met during the calendar year.
9. Co-payment – The co-pay is the fee you pay when you visit your primary doctor
or specialist.
10. Out-of-pocket – The maximum amount you will spend during the calendar year for medical expenses. The limit is set by the insurer and may not include the
deductible.
11. Network – A specified group of healthcare providers who deliver care to the
membership of a health care plan at a contracted rate.
12. Premium – The cost of the insurance plan.
13. Catastrophic Plan – A low cost health coverage plan with a high deductible and which is suitable for young and/or healthy people or those who cannot afford full coverage.
14. Pre-existing Conditions – A medical condition which was diagnosed and/or
treated before an application is made for insurance coverage.
15. Open Enrollment – A specified period of time on an annual basis when the general public can enroll in healthcare coverage.
16. Cost Sharing Reduction – A government subsidy which lowers the out-of-pocket expense or reduces the premium.

Everyone needs healthcare coverage, however, shopping for a plan is an overwhelming task if not fully informed. The first step before looking is to make sure you have a good understanding of the needs of your family and yourself. The next step is to become familiar with what is offered in your area and to acquire a firsthand knowledge of the unfamiliar terms, plans, and options before you make a decision.

While it may be impossible to keep your child’s diet entirely free from additives of any kind it is important to try to limit them as much as possible.

Food Additives: The Obvious And The Less Obvious

There are two types of food additives. The first is the obvious additives like sugars, white flour, chemical preservatives, artificial colors and flavorings. These are directly added to the food and should be listed on the label. There are many additives with tricky sounding names including some that are less harmful than their name implies and some that are more harmful.

The other type of additive is the non-direct. These are additives that may get added to the food simply through contact with the packaging materials or during the manufacturing process. Some of these can be more harmful than the additives that are found in the food itself so it is important to consider packaging when choosing food for your child.

Food Additives And Obesity Rates

Obesity has reached nearly epidemic proportions especially in children. According to the American Heart Association, 1 in every 3 children and teens are considered obese. Most of them will suffer from a number of weight related health problems including:

Cardiac disease including heart attack and stroke
Type II Diabetes
Mental health issues including anxiety and depression
Low self-esteem

These children may also be more likely to be injured or easily over-exerted during even mild exercise. They may have breathing issues such as asthma at higher rates than their normal weight peers.

Some of the increase in obesity has been linked to an indirect food additive called BPA (bisphenol A). Found in the lining of canned foods and in plastics such as water bottles and storage containers, this chemical disrupts a number of chemical processes in the body especially in relation to endocrines. This disruption can attribute to the conditions that lead to weight gain even when the child is given a healthier diet.

Why Food Additives Affect Children More Than Adults

A child and an adult eating the same foods may react differently. Pound for pound, the child is taking in more of that food. Their organs are maturing which means that they may not be able to process or rid themselves of these chemicals as easily as an adult. The longer the chemical is in the system, the higher the risk of negative affects. By the time the chemical is flushed out, it may have already caused enough harm that future food additives will cause even more damage in a vicious cycle that may be nearly impossible to break or to repair.

Teenagers need the proper sleep to help avoid mental health issues

Teenagers need between eight and nine hours of sleep a night, but most only will get an average of five. Mental health issues among teenagers can stem from being sleep deprived.

Why is sleep among teenagers important?

A teenager is still mentally and physically growing. Without adequate rest they become exhausted and no longer are functioning to their full capability.

What happens to a teenager who doesn’t get enough sleep?

•Can’t focus- Without enough nightly sleep teenagers can’t focus. When exhaustion sets in a simple conversation can become a struggle.
•Low energy- A body sleeps to recharge itself and without the right amount of sleep the energy is going to be low in a teenager.
•Hindered learning- A teenager’s brain is always learning new things. Without the proper rest none of that knowledge is being taken in. Learning becomes a struggle.
•Aggravation and Stress- Sometimes a teenager who is normally calm can start to show signs of aggravation and stress toward people. Sleep deprived can cause mood swings, which can easily shift frequently.
•Unhealthy eating – Teenagers have a tendency to eat some unhealthy food as a norm, but when they are exhausted they will turn to unhealthy choices more often.
•Depression- Being sleep deprived can possibly lead to depression, due to not thinking clearly and feeling like nothing is going right in their world. Depression can set in quickly with a teenager and getting more sleep may help correct some of it.
•Skin and stomach issues- Sometimes not getting enough sleep aggravates the body and it starts to act up in ways such as, unhealthy skin issues and even stomach issues. This can also be linked to unhealthy eating.
•Illness- When a teenager’s body doesn’t get the proper rest there is more chance of catching illnesses. The immune system doesn’t work properly when the body is tired.

All these items listed can play a big part in a teenager’s mental health. The more sleep and rest they get, the less issues arise. They are more focused, make better food choices, and have a better outlook about the surroundings and people around them.

What are things that can be done to help teenagers get more sleep?

•Schedule bedtimes- Just like adults, teenagers work well when they have a set routine. They need a proper bedtime that is the same every night. Their body clock will quickly fall into the routine.
•No electronics- Having electronics going while trying to sleep confuses the brain and it isn’t sure if it’s time to wake up or go to sleep.
•Quietness- Having quietness in a room when it’s time to sleep allows the body and brain to shut down.

A teenager’s mental health will possibly stay in a healthy state if they will take time to get the required rest. Having a good bedtime routine will benefit them overall and help them have a more productive life.
