Common Signs That You Might Be Suffering From Sleep Deprivation

May 22, 2018 By Carole Erickson Leave a Comment

Getting a proper night’s rest is something that many people struggle to do. However, a lack of sleep can cause serious problems. With that being said, here is a look at some common signs that show that you are suffering from sleep deprivation.

Your Immune System Is Weak

If you are constantly getting sick, that could be a sign that you are suffering from sleep deprivation. A lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, which makes it easier for you to catch a cold or the flu. Research has shown that the amount of sleep that you get may impact your cell’s immune response development.

You’ll Have Untimely Urges

A lack of sleep will release different hunger hormones that will cause you to have an urge to eat during hours that you normally wouldn’t think of eating. During this eating binge, you’ll likely eat foods with a lot of calories, which could potentially lead to you gaining weight. You could also develop high blood pressure issues, as well as diabetes.

Your Mood Changes

When you are suffering from sleep deprivation, you could quickly lose patience and become irritated. You may have mood swings. Research has shown that sleep deprivation can damage the part of the brain that allows you to control your emotions and thought processes. You may generally speak more negatively about different situations in your life. Sleep deprivation can impact your impulse control, while also causing you to show less empathy towards your friends and family.

A Decrease In Sexual Performance

Many doctors believe that sleep is essential to replenishing and releasing your sex hormones. A consistent lack of sleep can cause your testosterone to drop significantly. You’ll see a decrease in your sex drive. In some cases, sleep deprivation can damage your reproductive system.

A Lack Of Fitness

A lack of sleep can impact your ability to build muscle and burn fat. Without sleep, your muscles will not have the necessary ingredients to grow. Your body runs on a system of maintenance. A lack of sleep will disrupt that system. That could make it harder for you to go to the gym and lose weight.

General Fatigue

Dealing with increasingly low moods is a sign that you are fatigued. You may also have trouble concentrating. Sleep can help regenerate different neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

You Have Trouble Performing Tasks

Sleep deprivation can impact your problem-solving skills and also cause you to have memory loss. If you are awake for over 20 hours, that could impact your ability to perform common tasks such as operating a motor vehicle.
