March 2, 2022 By Janie Leave a Comment

Paycom Center is Oklahoma City’s premier sports and entertainment venue located downtown at 100 W. Reno Ave. The facility is managed by ASM Global but owned by the City of Oklahoma City.

History of Paycom Center

MAPS, Oklahoma City’s visionary capital improvement program, funded the original construction of Paycom Center in 1999. However, the city’s residents voted to fund the renovation project, upgrading the facilities and encouraging Oklahoma City’s overall growth into new sports, entertainment, conventions and cultural events.

The facility opened on June 8, 2002, with an initial cost of $89.2 million. Opening celebrations included a dedication ceremony led by Mayor Kirk Humphreys. In addition, there was a unique open house ceremony for the surrounding community to take a sneak peek.

Since it opened its doors, Paycom Center has hosted more than 1,200 events and seen more than 10 million fans walk through the doors. Since the beginning of the 2008-09 NBA season, the arena has served as the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder. It has also been home to the Oklahoma City Blazers and Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, as well as world-class concerts, top-tier entertainment, major conventions and other sporting events.

How Getting More Sleep Could Help You Lose Weight

October 11, 2018 By Conrad Nunez Leave a Comment

How Getting More Sleep Could Help You Lose Weight

How Getting More Sleep Could Help You Lose Weight

With life being so fast-paced, it’s no wonder why lack of sleep adds to the unwanted weight gain we tend to fuss over while attempting to fit jeans that once fit so well. Lack of sleep is definitely one of those variables one must consider when deciding to get on the intimidating scale. There are many ways to avoid excessive weight gain and sleep is one of them.

The College Student

If we consider the college student, it is not uncommon for one to fall under the category of ‘freshmen fifteen’ which is basically known as the time in a college students life when gaining 10 to 15 pounds in the first year is known to happen. In extreme cases this can occur during the first few semesters. The life of a freshman in college, especially for those living on college grounds, consists of getting to know their surroundings, attempting to keep up their grades and GPA through long hours of study, and keeping up with their social life. All this including the anxiety that comes along with being away from home, some for the first time, adds to the stress of becoming an independent adult. It’s no secret some people tend to stress eat. All the hours of studying and late night snacking equates to an unhealthy amount of weight gain. Countless college students can testify to the fact that ordering late-night pizzas for a study cram isn’t unusual.

Unhealthy Midnight Snacking

The truth about snacking is that it can be healthy and encourage a well rounded nutritional lifestyle. Depending on how busy one’s schedule is, however, unhealthy snack choices are always easier. For those who work various hours and times of the evening, not being prepared can lead to weight gain brought on by those unhealthy snacks. Taking naps during the allotted 10-15 minute breaks rather than snacking from the vending machines is sure to cut some unwanted calories from one’s diet which adds to unwanted weight gain.

The Night Owl

There is something to be said about putting the body at rest. When one sleeps, it gives the body a chance to recuperate and rejuvenate itself. Foods that we’ve already eaten will be digested, and all sorts of wonderful things happen within our body as we sleep, this includes weight loss. When we sleep, we don’t eat. The night owls who tend to be awake all sorts of hours of the night, tend to consume more food for the sake of consumption. We don’t always eat when we’re hungry, and we‘re not always hungry when we eat, this is truer when we stay awake throughout the night. Eating becomes something to do to pass the time rather than something required to live. Very few are grabbing a salad pass midnight or an apple instead of cookies around two in the morning. Being asleep during those times will only aid in keeping one’s weight at a healthier level. So curb that appetite and go to sleep.

5 Tips For Living A Healthy And Balanced Lifestyle

5 Tips For Living A Healthy And Balanced Lifestyle

There are several tips that you can use for living a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Diet

The first tip is to make sure that you are eating a balanced diet on a regular basis. A balanced diet means that you should be getting enough carbohydrates, minerals, fats, proteins, and vitamins. It is important to remember that having a little bit of a pleasure snack every once in a while is going to be okay. As long as you are eating a variety of different foods with five portions of fruits and vegetables a day and chew up your food properly.

Water

The second tip is to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water. This means that you are going to need to drink between six to eight cups of water a day. Even though people will be able to live for several weeks without eating any food, you are not going to be able to go without water. If you are a person who does not like water, then you can mix it with juice. There is also a lot of water in fruits and vegetables, so if you have plenty of them in your diet, you should be good.

Relax

The third tip is to make sure to take some time out of your day so that you can relax. Some of the ways that you can do this are through fishing, having a bath, deep breathing, reading a book, or yoga. You will only need to do this for about an hour a day. This is because when you are mentally exhausted, then it can cause you to have depression, anxiety, and stress. Your life can be very hectic especially when you have kids that you have run after or run to your local grocery store.

Move

The fourth tip is to get moving. This means that you don’t need to make any excuses when it comes to exercising on a regular basis. You can do anything that is going to cause your heart rate to go up so it is going to be good for your heart as soon as you don’t overdo it. It might be a good idea to play a game of tennis, take a self-defense martial art class, or go swimming. In fact, you could even run up and down your stairs a few times a day to get a good workout.

Habits

The fifth tip is to get rid of some of the bad habits that you might have in your life. Some of these habits might include drinking or smoking. This is because these things can be very destructive to your body. Drinking can be harmful if you drink a lot of alcohol on a regular basis but in moderation, it is going to be fine. Too much of the alcohol is not going to be good for your health, but a glass of red wine at dinner is actually going to be excellent for your heart and health.

5 Lifestyle Tips For A Better Work/Life Balance

5 Lifestyle Tips For A Better Work/Life Balance

5 Lifestyle Tips For A Better Work/Life Balance

A healthy work/life balance is an often elusive goal that may seem impossible at times. Whether it’s work, family, relationships, or outside interests, many people feel pulled in several different directions at once.

Not all hope is lost, however. By following time-tested rituals and routines derived from Ayurvedic sources, you’ll achieve that hard-to-attain balance while improving your health and well-being. When you consider that Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old tradition, it’s undoubtedly time-tested. Here’s a look at five tips that help you to find a better balance.

1. The Benefits of Taking A Bath

You may not realize that taking baths has many therapeutic benefits beyond overall hygiene and cleanliness. For starters, baths help relieve stress and are a great way to unwind after a stressful day. Baths also help boost brain power – especially when essential oils are added – and work as a natural sleep aid.

2. Achieve Better Balance By Drinking Tea

Tea is enjoyed by many cultures and is said to have medicinal effects thanks to its antioxidants that may help inhibit tumor growth, and even lower your risk of developing cancer, as well as lowering your risk of heart disease.

3. Calming Your Mind

Meditation and other practices designed to help clear your mind are a great help in your pursuit of a better work/life balance. From calming your mind and easing stress, to improving clarity, a daily dose of calming your mind is essential.

4. The Many Benefits of Going Outside

Another great way to calm your mind and ease stress is by getting out in nature – whether that means a walk in the woods or your favorite urban park. But being outdoors provides a host of other physical and mental benefits, including:

* Improves sleep
Being outside in fresh air acts as a great sleep aid for many people.

* Reduces stress
Slowing down and freeing yourself from busywork and other daily tasks have a natural calming effect. You’ll feel restore and mentally sharper.

* It provides a natural dose of vitamin D
Being exposed to natural sunlight increases the body’s supply of vitamin D, and vitamin D has many proven health benefits.

* Fresh air is, well, fresher air
Many studies show that indoor air has many more contaminants than the air outdoors. Getting outside provides an escape from indoor air pollution and its many chemicals.

* It’s a great way to get exercise
The importance of exercise is well-documented and being outside is a great way to add physical activity to your daily life.

5. Take Time For Yourself

You’ll achieve a better balance through a combination of time spent with others and time with yourself. Spending time alone helps you to disconnect, focus on yourself and your hobbies and interests, and to value yourself with kindness and respect.

3 Relationship Tips To Avoid

August 14, 2018 By Carole Erickson Leave a Comment

3 Relationship Tips To Avoid

3 Relationship Tips To Avoid

If you’re like most people, you are probably trying to g=figure out how to make relationships work. There is a lot of advice that comes with relationships. However, not all of them are good. In fact, there are some pieces of advice that are to be avoided completely. The following pieces of advice can actually cause more harm than good.

Labels

One piece of advice that you should not follow is advice to label your relationship. If you try to attach a label to your relationship, then you are running the risk of hurting it. It is better to let the relationship develop in a way that is healthy and natural for it. Attaching labels could be a way of forcing a certain aspect of the relationship. If you are only a couple of weeks in the relationship, it is better to give it a little more time so that you and the person you are with can know whether or not you are a match.

Saying I Love You

One of the riskiest things you can do in your relationship is to say that you love someone. The word “love” carries a lot of weight. Even if you feel it deep down in your core, it is a better idea to save it for a later time. For one thing, different people have different experiences with love, and the person you are with might not be ready to commit or is not ready to risk any type of pain.

Social Media

Even if you are very excited about your relationship, the worst thing to do is smother the person you are with. One of the ways you can scare the person away is by being constantly on them on social media. For instance, if you are liking every picture of that person on social media, this might cause them to have second thoughts about you. It is better to have some kind of life other than this relationship. This shows the person you are with that you are healthy and balanced.

These are just some of the behaviors that can jeopardize a relationship. However, one thing to remember is that everyone is different and each relationship has its own specific needs. Therefore, it is important to take your time and figure out the type of relationship you have so that you can treat it accordingly. Also, if a relationship does not work out, don’t take it too hard. Let it be a learning experience.

The Spices of Life

May 18, 2018 By Angelica Payne Leave a Comment

Spices have been used for thousands of years to improve the taste and aroma of food including food that was tainted. They were so important that it can be said that spices changed the history of the world. One reason that Columbus sailed to the new world was to find an all-water route to the spice islands in the east. In modern times, spices are used not only to enhance the taste and aroma of foods but for their health benefits. Turmeric, for example, is believed to have cancer fighting properties.

What’s the Difference Between an Herb and a Spice?

The differences between an herb and a spice can be complicated, but for many botanists an herb is a non-woody plant. But even here there are exceptions, for roses and rosemary become woody shrubs over time.

Many, but not all spices grow in the tropics, which was why an easy trade route from there to Europe was so important. They are often aromatic lichens or parts of woody plants such as trees, shrubs or vines. Often, spices are the roots, flowers, seeds or fruit of herbaceous plants. Cilantro, easy to grow in a garden, is considered an herb, Its seed, coriander, is considered a spice. Here are some commonly used spices:

Cardamom

Cardamon is native to India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The fruit of the plant is used. They are ribbed, roundish to oblong, and each one contains 14 to 20 seeds. The fruits are harvested just before the seeds are ripe and dried in kilns or in the sun. They’re sold whole to preserve the fragrance of the seeds. Cardamom pods are then split open, and the seeds are used in curries, stews and beverages.

Saffron

This admittedly expensive spice is made from the stigmas of the saffron crocus. The expense of the spice probably has to do with the fact that these delicate stigmas have to be picked by hand then separated and dried in the sun. Saffron not only adds flavor and a delicious aroma to foods, but even a pinch of saffron dyes food bright orange-yellow. Like cardamom, saffron is used to make curry. Saffron comes in powdered form and as stigma threads.

Ginger

This is one of the oldest and most commonly used of the spices. Grown in all warm countries, the spice is made from the rhizome, which is a type of root. Ginger root can be peeled and eaten raw when it’s young. It is peeled, sliced, minced, dried and powdered and added to stir fries, casseroles, soups and stews. Dried, powdered ginger also adds zest to curries.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is made from the bark of the cinnamon tree, an evergreen that grows to 60 feet tall in the tropics. The bark is cut off the stems of young trees, bundled and allowed to ferment. After that the outer layer is craped off and the bark rolled up and dried. Cinnamon joins ginger as one of the most popular spices. They are sometimes used together in desserts or Vietnamese pho.
