Today, many people spend a significant amount of time using their smartphones. People are dependent on the information available on their smartphones, and they also spend time connecting with family and friends via text and social media. Many people cannot resist the temptation to check their phones every few minutes.

Using a smartphone improperly can cause significant health impacts. Excessive smartphone use causes sleep disturbances, muscle strain, eye problems, and repetitive stress injuries. Here are four practical tips on how to use your smartphone without causing health problems.

Reduce Blue Light

Blue light such as that from electronic devices causes the brain to stay in an awake pattern. Blue light also causes eye strain and at its worst, eye damage. Holding the phone close to your face exacerbates this problem. Ideally, you should put your phone and all other blue light-emitting devices away one hour before bedtime. If you cannot do this, use the blue light reducing function on your smartphone. This will help, but putting your phone away would be better.

Use Your Phone Ergonomically

Just as you set up your work space to be ergonomically correct, you need to pay attention to the posture in which you are using your smartphone. Too many people hunch over their phones, causing shoulder, neck, and back strain. Ideally, bring the phone up to eye level when using it. When you are sitting down, instead of holding the phone up to your face, lean forward and put your elbows on your knees.

Protect Your Eyes

Take frequent breaks from using your smartphone. Any extended period of close-up reading can strain your eyes, and the glare from a smartphone screen is especially damaging. If you wear eyeglasses, be sure to get an anti-glare coating.

Prevent Repetitive Stress Injuries

Problems such as carpal tunnel can stem from improper use of a smartphone. Hunching over the phone while typing with one or two fingers may seem harmless, but you may find that you experience problems down the road. Do your best to frequently change positions while using your phone, and avoid holding it at an awkward angle.

While most people rely on their smartphones as a source of news, information, and entertainment, it is wise to limit the time spent on these devices. If you can’t limit your exposure, be sure to use the phone ergonomically and limit your exposure to blue light. Take good care of your health while using a smartphone, and you should not run into any medical problems in the years to come.

There are several well-established ways to keep healthy. You need to drink enough water, eat a balanced diet within the calorie and nutritional guidelines, and get a certain amount of exercise each day. For many people, these basic tenets are well-known and not too challenging to put into place.

One thing often limits individuals from being able to carry through with these healthy practices; work. While most people need to work in order to meet their financial obligations, work can have a big toll on your well-being, and this is not limited to those who undertake grueling manual labor. Even office jobs have aspects to them which can lead to poor health. Here are five of the ways in which your job may be harming your health.

Poor Diet

Many people have a poor diet at least partly as a result of their jobs. Many jobs require individuals to socialize and eat out or drink alcohol regularly and this can have a toll on your long-term health. Other people have a limited window to eat and will quickly grab fast food or other unhealthy snacks to meet their hunger but provide little in the way of nutrition. Many offices also have a significant number of snacks in their cafeteria along with soft drinks and many people will pack on the pounds simply by finding ways to help pass the time. A poor diet is often added to with a tight work schedule and can lead to a number of long-term health problems associated with being overweight.

Lack of Exercise

Work takes up a significant amount of each day and limits the time that you have to exercise and undertake other important movements that can lower your risk for a number of health problems. When you are working at a desk you spend a lot of the day sedentary and not burning off the calories that you consume. Being active will help to keep you thin, agile, and able to lower your risks of heart diseases. Work hinders this ability in many ways.

Heightened Stress And Anxiety Levels

Work can cause a lot of stress, particularly when you are always plugged in due to modern technologies. Stress can lead to mental health problems, fatigue, and pressure that can decrease your motivation and harm your ability to interact positively with your loved ones. Stress can be a real killer and decrease your ability to fight off major illnesses and recover from injuries. Work causes stress, and this can be a negative consequence of working.

Loss of Sleep

When you sleep your body is better able to recover from the stresses of the day and can more quickly rebuild muscle and repair from injuries. Due to the significant time commitment that many people have towards their jobs, many people will cut down on their sleep and suffer long-term health problems as a result.

Need To Unwind

In order to cope with the challenge of working, many people turn to outside substances like tobacco, alcohol, and narcotics. Using these substances can put you at risk for a number of different health problems.

It is necessary to work for most people, but there are many potential costs to your health as a result of working. Understanding these risks can help you to find ways to counter these health risks and lead a healthier lifestyle.
